Top 8 Reasons Why Not To Become a StartUp Lady

January 25th, 2008 · 2 Comments

What a heck of a way to start a blog to inspire and be a resource for women entrepreneurs? Well, here it goes because I believe these are areas to be considered before becoming a StartUp Lady! These are in no particular order and this is my own list created from my own experiences.

  1. Do not take the leap if you are great at starting projects; but, are lousy at finishing any of them. Determine a way or method of getting organized or focused that works for you. See Leo Babuto’s post on Top 12 Organizing Tips and 7 Powerful Steps to Overcoming Resistance over at Zen Habits for some suggestions. Also, Skellie over at Skelliewag.org has a good post regarding starting projects titled 5 Hard Questions You Should Answer Before Starting a New Project.
  2. Do not take the leap if you think entrepreneurship is going to free some of your time or allow you to spend more time with your family. You will be able to choose when and where you work and how hard you work; but, there are very few entrepreneurs that immediately have free time and tons of money flowing to them when they first begin.
  3. Do not take the leap if you don’t believe that positive affirmations and visualization are methods used by all successful entrepreneurs.
  4. Do not take the leap if you haven’t at least started to work on the fear of criticism and failure and the emotion of worry. You are just about guaranteed for failure; unless you can determine a method for getting control of these fears and emotions. Obviously, for most people these are with us when becoming an entrepreneur (if not all of our lives). But, if you at least recognize them and are working on methods for separating yourself from these fears and emotions; you are well on your way.
  5. Do not take the leap if you are not good at listening to your intuition. You will be too easily discouraged by others - especially those closest to you!
  6. Do not take the leap if you have a very definite back up plan. I know that I will have many that disagree with me; but, I believe you will give up easier and/or sooner if you have this set in stone. Most successful entrepreneurs became successful on the brink of bankruptcy, just after bankruptcy or some other type of major personal crisis or personal disaster.
  7. Do not take the leap if you are not good at listening to your intuition. I have repeated this one because is is also important in knowing when to recognize you’ve made a mistake.
  8. Do not take the leap unless you have a white heat burning desire to succeed at whatever it is you are attempting backed with having faith in yourself. Napoleon Hill’s book Think & Grow Rich will most definitely help with this area.

Well, there you have it. My Top 8 Reasons Why Not To Become a Startup Lady. Again, this is only my observations in striving to become a successful entrepreneur and StartUp Lady. (The books I recommend below will help you learn more about all of the above areas.)
